Domestic Violence Causes Fatal St. Cloud Multi-Vehicle Accident
A late Friday night St. Cloud car accident on Old Canoe Creek Road near Lexington Boulevard that resulted in death was caused by domestic violence issues, according to local law enforcement officers. While detectives have not released the details as to what happened leading up to the fatal crash, it seems a couple had a late-night dispute that resulted in the woman driving away and the boyfriend following in another vehicle. Then, the man intentionally drove into her vehicle causing a chain reaction that included at least five other cars. One innocent driver whose vehicle was struck died at the scene, while several other drivers were hurt. The male suspect, who suffered injuries in the crash, is facing battery charges, and his girlfriend was taken to the hospital for treatment.
The Dangers of Road Rage
It is estimated by the National Safety Council that more than 13,000 car accidents in the U.S. annually are caused by speeding. Road rage is a type of aggressive driving, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), that involves moving traffic violations that endanger other people and/or property. The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety has found that 56% of all car accidents in the U.S. are caused by road rage. Road rage accidents are more likely to cause severe injuries or fatalities than other causes of crashes. Some of the most common types of aggressive driving and/or road rage include behaviors like:
- Failing to yield the right of way;
- Illegally passing others;
- Passing on the inside;
- Going significantly above the speed limit;
- Disregarding traffic signals and signs;
- Driving through stop signs or red lights; and
- Weaving in and out of traffic or traffic lanes.
There are several reasons why road rage poses such a danger, including the fact that statistics show:
- Car accidents caused by aggressive drivers often happen at high speeds;
- Aggressive drivers generally do not have full control of the vehicle; and
- Drivers with road rage are typically unable to swerve or move out of the way to avoid a crash.
For these reasons, an aggressive driver who causes another’s injury or death should be required to compensate those who are hurt due to his or her negligent driving. Victims of road rage and their loved ones may be able to pursue a Florida personal injury or wrongful death claim in civil court. These cases seek monetary compensation for medical expenses, hospital visits, physical or mental therapy sessions, loss of present and future wages, emotional distress, and pain and suffering.
