Bogin, Munns & Munns Helps Champion Recognition and Education on Hidden Epidemic
ORLANDO, FL – August 27, 2025 – The Orange County Board of County Commissioners has officially proclaimed September 2025 as Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) Awareness Month and September 9th as FASD Awareness Day, thanks to coordinated efforts with attorneys at Bogin, Munns & Munns and the support of Mayor Jerry L. Demings.
Mayor Demings emphasized the importance of this recognition, stating:
“I am pleased to raise awareness of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders. Shining a light on these disorders can potentially prevent physical, behavioral, and learning disabilities for our youth. Alcohol and pregnancy do not mix, and I applaud the efforts the Munns family and Bogin, Munns & Munns have devoted to championing such a cause.”
To mark this important proclamation, Orange County will light government buildings in red on September 9th. Residents are also encouraged to wear red shoes in solidarity with the Red Shoes Rock international awareness campaign.
A Personal Mission for Awareness
Spencer Munns and his wife Lindsey adopted two children affected by FASD. Their family’s journey fuels their mission to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and promote prevention.
“We are launching a fight against FASD, starting with a day of awareness,” said Munns. “It’s a crucial step, considering that more than 80% of individuals living with FASD are undiagnosed or misdiagnosed.”
Munns highlights this in his awareness video “Chasing Hope”, where he calls FASD a “hidden epidemic”—a disability that often goes unseen. “You can’t look inside the brain and see where one in a billion connections didn’t develop,” he explains. “We want to give those who are suffering the chance to identify the cause of their challenges and the tools to thrive.”
Understanding FASD
FASD is an umbrella term for over 420 conditions caused by prenatal alcohol exposure. These lifelong challenges can include low birth weight, developmental delays, learning disabilities, behavioral difficulties, and impaired executive functioning.
According to a 2017 JAMA Pediatrics study, approximately 1,700 infants are born with FASD each day in the United States. Among women who drink during pregnancy, 1 in 13 delivers a child with FASD.
Investing in the Future: The FASD Scholarship
As part of its commitment, Bogin, Munns & Munns established a $2,500 FASD Awareness Scholarship, awarded annually to students either personally affected by FASD or committed to advancing awareness, research, and advocacy.
“The scholarship is one way we can help spread awareness while supporting the next generation of leaders committed to this cause,” Munns said.
