FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Orange County Goes Red for FASD Awareness This September
Red Shoes Rock, Countywide Events, and a National “Move FASD” Campaign Shine Light on a Hidden Epidemic
Orlando, FL – September 2025 – Orange County landmarks will light up red on Tuesday, September 9th, and residents are encouraged to wear red shoes in solidarity with the international Red Shoes Rock campaign to raise awareness for Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD).
The proclamation of September as FASD Awareness Month and September 9th as FASD Awareness Day was made official by the Orange County Board of County Commissioners and Mayor Jerry L. Demings, following coordinated efforts by Bogin, Munns & Munns.
Mayor Demings underscored the importance of the campaign:
“I am pleased to raise awareness of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders. Shining a light on these disorders can potentially prevent physical, behavioral, and learning disabilities for our youth. I applaud the efforts the Munns family and Bogin, Munns & Munns have devoted to championing such a cause.”
Local Faces, National Movement
As part of a national initiative led by FASD United, Bogin, Munns & Munns has partnered with HiLi Fitness to bring “Move FASD” to Orlando. The event will feature high-energy, low-impact Xformer and Hot Mat Pilates classes, giveaways, and local vendors —blending wellness and awareness.
“FASD is a hidden epidemic that touches countless families, including mine,” said firm partner Spencer Munns, whose family has been directly impacted. “By raising awareness, we can help prevent FASD and give those already affected the recognition and resources they deserve.”
Other community partners—including UCF College of Medicine, the University of Florida, and CycleBar Winter Park—are hosting events and fundraisers throughout September to expand awareness across Central Florida.
FASD by the Numbers
FASD is a lifelong, brain-based disability caused by prenatal alcohol exposure. Its effects are profound, but it remains widely misunderstood and under diagnosed:
- 1 in 20 U.S. schoolchildren may have an FASD — more common than autism.
- The leading preventable cause of birth defects and learning disabilities.
- 80% of individuals with FASD are undiagnosed or misdiagnosed.
- The lifetime cost per individual can exceed $2 million.
- FASD is 100% preventable.
How to Participate – September 9th
- Wear red shoes or red clothing to show support.
- Post a photo with hashtags: #redshoesrock
- Attend local events, visit red-lit landmarks, or share educational resources in your community.
Scholarship Initiative
Bogin, Munns & Munns continues its advocacy through the annual $2,500 FASD Scholarship, awarded to students affected by FASD or committed to advancing awareness and prevention.
