I genuinely believe that helping people prevent financial troubles from stepping on their neck is a societally valuable thing. It feels good to take calls from folks who are at the end of their rope and totally frightened, and to talk them off the ledge until they can take a deep breath again and really see a light at the end of the tunnel.

Bankruptcy law, the kind of law I specialize in, requires gaining a deep level of trust from a client. If you don’t open up for me, I can’t help you as much as I want or you need. I understand why people might be hesitant to let anyone know about the situation they’re in. Many people consider bankruptcy to be equal parts embarrassing and terrifying. I have never felt that way, and I do everything in my power to show people that I truly empathize with you. My ability to make someone feel safe and comfortable in a law office might be my biggest strength as a bankruptcy attorney.

I spent the end of law school and the beginning of my career as a bankruptcy attorney working for my father’s solo law firm. He’s been an attorney for over 35 years, and I was lucky to be able to absorb so much from him. My mother also ran the office, and her experience running Legal Aid in Broward County helped teach me how to efficiently help people that might not have much to give. Working as a family was such a valuable experience for me. I was also able to focus on bankruptcy right out of the gate, an opportunity which not many young attorneys have.

I’ve seen pictures of me as a baby wearing a food-covered bib that reads “Future Lawyer,” so I may not have had much of a choice about being one. But I was lucky enough to watch my father and grandfather practice law, and see how much they enjoyed rising to the intellectual challenges the job presents.

Before going to law school I worked for Hard Rock Orlando, briefly at the concert venue but primarily at the hotel. I was a concierge and front desk agent, and was occasionally asked to give guided tours of the property to new hires. I’ve seen music festivals in Australia, hung out with monkeys in Nicaragua, and scaled a cliffside lighthouse in sideways Irish rain. I try to support local Orlando musicians and artists with whatever spare time I have.

When I’m not practicing law I am an active musician. I’ve been in gigging bands since college. Drums are my weapon of choice, but I can handle anything with strings, and I’ve been told that I can sing pretty well. If I wasn’t a lawyer, I’d probably have ended up working whatever job gave me the flexibility to play at my discretion.
